You Can Heal Your Life – Louise Hay

Book Summary

You Can Heal Your Life is an amazing book that really delivers on its title. The book was one of the first of its kind to bring affirmations to people in such an easy to use and understand way. The power of the mind-body connection is explained so well in the book and the affirmations for each body condition at the back of the book are pure gold. The most amazing section is where Louise shares how she used these techniques to cure herself of cancer. This book is a must have on every shelf. It is an invaluable reference and is the perfect compliment to a well-balanced approach to health and well-being.

You Can Heal Your Life, Louise Hay, 1984. Hay House. ISBN 13: 978-0937611012

Why I Read the Book

I first encountered the concept that different parts of the body are connected emotional states from my reflexologist in 2004. It was a revelation. When she told me about the different emotions that could be released when you activate each organ through the reflexes, everything within me zinged. There was a truth there that resonated with me.

Shortly afterwards I found You Can Heal Your Life in a second-hand bookstore. It popped off the shelf and I saw, as I flipped to the back, the list of body conditions, the mental patterns that created them, and the affirmation that works like a mental antidote to the poison of unhelpful thoughts. In addition, the book also covers, work, finances, and relationships as well and how you can improve every area of your life with a change in your thinking.

Yes! Just what I was looking for and exactly when I needed it.

What I got from it Personally – The Book in Action

I immediately put the book and its exercises and affirmations to work. I saw immediate results. I still use it regularly today and it is a textbook in our Reiki courses. By using affirmations, I can honestly say that my whole life has changed. I no longer see myself as a hapless victim of circumstance but as a powerful component of my own health and well-being. I have stopped migraines in their tracks with a simple shift in thinking. I have eased 90% of my allergy and asthma symptoms. I have acknowledged that my thoughts powerfully affect my body as well as my life.

This book powerfully shifted my entire way of thinking about health. If a simple thought could shift a physical condition, then what else could it shift? Everything, as it turns out. There is really no upper limit on the good that comes from a shift in thoughts. One of the biggest benefits is that you end up thinking differently!

Even if you are not convinced about the whole mind-body connection (although where does your brain live, if not in your body?), thinking a better thought is absolutely a huge improvement in your quality of life. There is a big difference between hope and despair. With practice, we can choose our thoughts to be hopeful and joyous.

With the help of this book, I am no longer a slave to my thinking. I learned to train my thoughts to ones that support me and I no longer give energy to thoughts that do not support me. It really has healed my life.

Secret Art of Happiness

Hey! Hi There!

Did you know that you are awesome?

You are.

No really. I do this for a living.

I get the great gift of hanging out with amazing people and teaching Reiki and meditation. So, you know I have some background in noticing the amazing in people, and trust me when I say – you rule!

One of the tremendous gifts I receive in my classes is getting to witness people recognize their own inner spark of light. The twinkle returns to their eyes, the smiles return to their faces, and their bodies (and their lives) open up and become healthier and more relaxed. It is amazing to witness that change in people. It is truly one of the best things in life to help people access that kind of consistent joy and happiness.

Along that journey I have been asked some great questions that have prompted me to think deeply about the stuff I teach. I get inspired to create more ways of sharing the magic that happens in a Reiki class with more people. One of the biggest questions I get is about the Reiki Ideals and it prompted me to write a whole book!

The Reiki Ideals are five simple principles for leading a happy and fulfilled life.

Just for today:

  • do not anger;
  • do not worry;
  • be grateful for your many blessings;
  • do your meditative and self-care work honestly; and
  • be kind to every living thing (including yourself!).

Oh sure! That is easy, right!?

Well, no. It is not so easy. That is why I wrote a book about it!

Living by these five principles has formed the core foundation of the work I have been doing over these last few years of teaching. Keeping the Reiki Ideals in my mind throughout the day has allowed me to reach a stable and lasting sense of contentment in life. They allow me to better deal with the ups and downs of life and to release old thoughts and unhelpful behaviours for good.

I have also witnessed other people shift so much, just by including the Reiki Ideals into their daily lives.

The sweet thing is that these are universal principles!

Everyone can use these five ideals to radically change their lives for the better.

I am helping to get the message out about the power of these simple ideas by publishing my book this year (For reals! This is happening!). I have also created an online webinar style meditation course called Secret Art of Happiness Meditation Course to begin teaching this self-development gold to others.

You don’t need to know Reiki to join, just have an open mind and a willingness to change.

The course is 5 weeks long and – you guessed it! – each class will focus on each Reiki Ideal. It runs five consecutive Thursdays from 8 to 9 pm, April 2 to April 30, 2015. The investment in this course is $250 and 5 hours of your time.

If you are interested, I am also hosting a free Meditation Class Sampler on March 19, 2015 from 8 to 9 pm. It is a little amuse bouche of a class to let you experience what the full course class would be like.

I would be so happy to see you there!

Love, Geneva

ps. I am also offering Reiki classes again starting April 14th. Look below for more cool stuff that is happening in GenevaLand. 🙂

Compassion and Kindness

The fifth Reiki Ideal is “Be kind to your neighbour and every living thing“. Often I find that people in my classes do not need any help in being kind and compassionate to others. They offer their love and support and time to anyone and everyone. Except one. Themselves.

There is something about being kind to ourselves where we stumble and fall short. Our kind and loving nature is externally focused. By focusing outside of the self, it is far more likely that we come to expect that external conditions will satisfy our inner needs. We vacate our own emotional house, so to speak, and leave its care and maintenance to others.

Music Heals

What’s Going On – Marvin Gaye

I recently went through our vast music collection. I wanted to put together a few songs that lifted my heart and made my toes tap. Maybe even a few that make me shimmy and shake. I put together an Uplift Mix. What a lovely meandering through my past. Each song reminded me of where I was when I was listening to them, but also how far I have come.

Pump up the volume – M/A/R/R/S

I could remember the best moments of my life, the saddest moments, and everything inbetween. Some songs have always been there for me. My favorite is Little Wing, by Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble, a cover of Jimi Hendrix’s song. It always seems to release whatever emotion is within me. If I am sad, his licks are so terribly mournful; if I am happy, each phrase is more joyful than the last. This one song has got me through so many things in life. Just music. Simply listening to one song. It changes everything. It heals.

I encourage you to dust off those old vinyl jackets, scan through your collection, and make yourself a modern day mixtape of your favorites. It is transformative!

Meditation – Writing to Your Cells

This a meditation to access the wisdom in your cells. It is part meditation and part writing exercise. Listen to the audio file in a quiet place with a pen and some paper handy. At the end of the meditation, go directly into the writing exercise by answering the following questions from the perspective of the innate wisdom of your cells. Write down these questions before you begin the meditation, or have them in a handy location.

Ask your cells:

  1. How are you protecting me?
  2. How are you teaching me to be creative?
  3. How are you teaching me to be strong?
  4. How have you made me more compassionate?
  5. How have you taught me to speak up and ask for what I need?
  6. How are you teaching me to follow my intuition?
  7. How have you taught me about connection? How have you connected me with new people, places or thoughts?
  8. How can I integrate your knowledge into my daily life to soothe your signals?
Let me know how it works for you!

Writing to your Cells Meditation

Here is a transcript of the meditation:

Get comfortable.

Sit with your spine straight, your arms gently resting on your lap.

Take a deep breath in.

As the breath flows out,

Allow your shoulder blades to release down your back.

Open up the space in your chest and breathe.

Bring your awareness to your breath.

Let your attention follow your breath,

All the way in.

Through your nose,

through your airways,

and down into your lungs.

Follow your breath out.

From the bottom of your lungs,

Through your airways,

And out your nose.

Breathe slowly

Breathe gently

Allow your breath to get softer, smoother, more rhythmic

Let your inhalations match your exhalations.
Evenly

in  and out.

Gently let your breath follow the rhythms of your body.

Turn your senses inward.

Notice the rhythm of your heart.

Feel it on a subtle level.

Give thanks to your heart for its joyful tempo.

Your heart is the metronome of your life.

Listen to its quiet music now.

Feel the rhythm of your heart echo in your cells.

Listen to the song in your cells.
Listen to the harmonious chorus.

Listen to your cells on a subtle level.

Give thanks to the trillions of cells that make up your body.

Your cells joyfully follow the rhythm of your heart.

There is great wisdom here, in your cells.

Allow that immense wisdom and joy and love

that your cells have for you

Radiate, Shine.
Let every cell in your body shine.
Each cell loves you unconditionally.

They are like faithful little pets that only want to please you and serve you.

They are so pleased to be with you on your journey through this time and space.

Some of these cells may be asking for your attention.

They have wisdom to share.

Allow the wisdom, love and guidance that is here for you to

flow through you now.

Ask your cells these questions.

How are you protecting me?

How are you teaching me to be creative?

How are you teaching me to be strong?

How have you made me more compassionate?

How have you taught me to speak up and ask for what I need?

How are you teaching me to follow my intuition?

How have you taught me about connection? How have you connected me with new people, places or thoughts?

How can I integrate your knowledge into my daily life to soothe your signals?

Breathe deeply.

Breathe fully.

And when you are ready,
You can open your eyes

And write down the answers your cells have for you.

Meditation – Joyful Body

This meditation is perfect for weight loss, increasing physical performance in sports, and just generally having a nice relationship with your body. It is a guided meditation, so it is pretty easy for first time meditators. Using headphones is good for focusing and reducing external distractions. My recordings are far from studio quality, but hey, they are completely free. 🙂

The meditation is called Joyful Body and is free, but please keep my name attached to it if you choose to share it, as I keep the copyrights.

Please let me know what your experience is. 😀
