Reiki Family: What is it like growing up in a spiritual family?

Walk into the front door of my mom’s house and you’ll immediately see a smudge station. A sign with the cheeky phrase, “Go smudge yourself,” painted on the wall. A mason jar is wired on holding a large sage bundle.

This is the custom. If you can make it past the Ganesh statue on the front porch, take off your boots and stay awhile, but you’ll have to clear your energy first.

Join us for tea and notice the crystal shelf in the shape of a pyramid, chakras hung down the wall and feel free to pick an oracle card out of the jar. Share the messages you’ve received. All of these things have been normal to me, that is until someone at LunaHolistic asked me what it was like to have Reiki parents.

Love in the face of rejection: When your teen pushes you away

Does your teen make a plan with you and then ditch you for her friends?
Does your teen say hurtful things to you?
Does your teen squirm away when you try to be physically affectionate?

Even the nicest teens say mean things.

True story:
I remember looking at a photo of my Mom when she was a young woman wearing plaid bellbottoms, and I said, “Did you actually think you looked GOOD back then?”
Ouch! Sorry, Mom.

Meditative Mandala Rock Art

My new obsession! Learning to draw and paint mandalas on rocks. I’ve always been a collector of rocks whenever I go anywhere near the water. Something about how they look and feel. I just find they look so pretty and bring such an earthy vibe to my home. I like interesting shapes, colours and imperfections.

Like people really. Aren’t we just like the rock, travelling through the waters of life, landing somewhere to take up space on land until the tides move us elsewhere. Tumbling and bumbling through the rough waters coming to rest on the floor of calm waters. Being worn down by the constant force of the water rolling over us, taking the edges off and taking new shape as life moves us forward.

Quantum Leaps: How Reiki Works

I have always been fascinated by distance Reiki. When I first learned about energy healing, I read stories about people being healed through sessions where the practitioner and the client were in different places, sometimes even different cities or countries. The effect of those Reiki sessions was just as powerful and profound as when they were done in person. Now that I am a Reiki Master, I have personally experienced and witnessed amazing changes in distance Reiki Sessions.

As a practitioner, I don’t do anything differently when I do a distance session compared to an in-person session, except I am visualizing putting my hands on the person and we are chatting on the phone. It is fascinating to my science brain.

Enjoying the Journey

“So often we become so focused on the finish line, that we fail to enjoy the journey.” –Dieter F. Uchtdorf

This has been coming up for me a lot lately.

In a world where we’re always striving to be someone or get somewhere, when I take a moment to appreciate my surroundings, and notice all my senses — how I’m feeling, what thoughts are swirling around me, and whether they’re serving me or not — I can consciously make a choice to react differently, because I care how I feel in this moment.

Just for Today, I will be Grateful

Just for today, I will be grateful.

I can’t commit to being happy all the time, but I can commit to being grateful, one day at a time. In fact, it is my daily commitment to gratitude that keeps me going. Giving thanks has been part of my life for as long as I can remember; prayers at meals and bedtime, and going around the table at Thanksgiving to say out loud, in front of everyone, what I am grateful for have become rituals that I enjoy. Every time I sit down to write a birthday card I end up expressing gratitude for the qualities in that person that touch my life. Another gratitude practice of mine is when I’m feeling frazzled or anxious, I get out my journal and write out pages of things I’m grateful for, to bring me back to a place of calm and appreciation. At the end of the day, I am most grateful for my family and my health, and all my other worries seem small.

Courage: Why stretching is good

After two years of writing and editing and writing and more editing… my first book is days away from being released. I’m riding through waves of courage and vulnerability that I have never before experienced with such soul-aching intensity.

At times, I cannot stop the tears of fulfillment from flowing. At others, I feel like I am free-falling. The weightlessness at the top of the rollercoaster seems to be stitched to me like Peter Pan’s shadow.

What is Reiki anyway?

I had the privilege of being interviewed by Deanne Barrett of thegratitudeworkshop.com recently. It was an amazing experience and generated such a great conversation.

In this video clip, Deanne asks one of the most common questions I get asked by people. “What is Reiki anyway?”
